Terms and licensing

Licensing

ECHO is an index and a mirror. Each dataset keeps the licence its authors gave it, which is recorded on the dataset page and in the PROVENANCE.json of every download. Where a licence could not be determined it is shown as unknown rather than guessed — check the original source before relying on it.

Nothing on this site grants you rights over any dataset beyond what its own licence already gives you.

Mirrored copies

Datasets are mirrored verbatim from the source recorded in their provenance file, to make retrieval durable and independent of the original host. If you are a dataset's author and would prefer it not be mirrored here, write to echo@data.syr.edu and it will be removed.

Data that is not here

Some sources distribute only identifiers because the platform's terms forbid redistributing content. Those datasets are indexed and described, but no content is hosted and none will be.

Personal data

Many of these datasets contain material authored by identifiable people. They are published for research use. You remain responsible for handling them lawfully and ethically, including any approvals your institution requires.

Platform logos

The small logos beside platform names say where a dataset came from. They are trademarks of their owners, shown only to identify the platform, and do not imply any endorsement. Most come from Simple Icons (CC0). Others are the platforms' own app or site icons (from their app-store listings, their websites or, for services that no longer exist, the Internet Archive). A few are from Wikimedia Commons: the Gnutella logo by Jusore (GPL 3.0), the BookCrossing logo by Ron Hornbaker, Bruce Pedersen and Heather Pedersen (CC BY 4.0), the BibSonomy logo by Robert Jäschke (CC BY-SA 4.0), the Koo logo (CC BY-SA 4.0), the Menéame logo (CC BY-SA 3.0) and the public-domain Orkut logo; the Buzznet logo is public domain (Wikipedia). If you represent a platform and would like its logo shown differently or removed, write to echo@data.syr.edu.
